When most people think about posture, balance, or spinal health, they tend to focus on the neck or back. However, every step you take begins at the foundation of your body—the feet.


Each foot contains 26 bones working together to absorb shock, provide stability, and create efficient movement. Among the most important are the talus, navicular, and cuboid bones. While these structures are relatively small, they play a major role in how force is transferred through the body during standing, walking, running, and everyday movement.


The talus serves as the connection between the foot and the lower leg. It helps transfer body weight from the tibia into the foot while allowing smooth motion at theankle. Because it acts as a central "bridge" between the leg and foot, restrictions or misalignment here can alter balance, gait mechanics, and weight distribution.


The navicular sits along the inside of the foot and plays a critical role in maintaining the arch. It functions as a key stabilizer, helping the foot absorb and distribute forces efficiently. When the navicular loses its ability to move properly, the arch can collapse or become less responsive, leading to increased stress throughout the foot and lower extremity.


On the outside of the foot lies the cuboid. This bone helps stabilize the lateral arch and serves as an important link between the rearfoot and forefoot. The cuboid contributes significantly to propulsion during walking and running. Dysfunction in this area can affect push-off mechanics, balance, and overall foot stability.


When these structures are not functioning properly, the effects are rarely isolated to the foot itself.


The body operates as a kinetic chain, meaning every joint and muscle influences those above and below it. A loss of proper foot mechanics can create compensations that travel upward through the ankles, knees, hips, pelvis, and spine. Over time, thebody adapts to these altered movement patterns, often leading to uneven stress on joints and muscles.


This is one reason why individuals with chronic foot dysfunction may also experience knee discomfort, hip tightness, low back pain, postural changes, or recurring muscle tension. The body is remarkably adaptable, but compensations are never as efficient as normal function.


Proper foot mechanics contribute to balance, stability, coordination, and efficient movement. They also provide critical sensory information to the nervous system regarding body position and movement. When the feet lose their ability to move and stabilize correctly, the nervous system must work harder to compensate.
