The Rib That Won't Stay Put

Have you ever taken a deep breath and felt a sharp pain between your shoulder blades? Or reached overhead only to feel a "catch" along your upper back? Maybe you've even thought you pulled a muscle when, in reality, it may have been a rib head that wasn't moving the way it should.

Each of your twelve ribs attaches to your thoracic spine through small joints called costovertebral joints. These joints are designed to glide smoothly with every breath, twist, bend, cough, and lift. In fact, your ribs move thousands of times each day without you ever noticing—at least when everything is functioning properly.

When one of these joints becomes restricted or irritated, the surrounding muscles often tighten in an effort to protect the area. The result? Pain that can feel like a muscle knot, discomfort with deep breathing, tenderness between the shoulder blades, pain wrapping around the chest, or even discomfort when rolling over in bed.

While a chiropractic adjustment helps restore proper motion to the rib and surrounding spinal joints, keeping it functioning well often depends on what happens between visits. Here are a few simple things you can do at home:

  • Keep your thoracic spine moving. Gentle rotations and extension exercises help prevent stiffness from building around the rib joints.

  • Improve your posture. Slouching places constant stress on the upper ribs and thoracic spine. Think "tall chest" rather than simply pulling your shoulders back.

  • Strengthen your mid-back. Exercises such as rows, band pull-aparts, and scapular retractions help build the muscles that stabilize the shoulder blades and reduce unnecessary strain on the ribs.

  • Practice diaphragmatic breathing. Slow, deep belly breathing encourages the ribs to move through their full range of motion rather than relying on shallow chest breathing.

  • Avoid repeated twisting while lifting. Turning with a heavy object in your hands is one of the quickest ways to irritate an already sensitive rib joint.

The good news is that rib dysfunction is often very responsive to care when addressed early. Restoring proper motion to the rib and thoracic spine not only helps relieve pain but also allows the surrounding muscles to relax and function the way they were designed to.

If you've been dealing with stubborn pain between your shoulder blades, discomfort with deep breaths, or that nagging feeling that "something just keeps slipping," don't ignore it. Sometimes the problem isn't the muscles at all—it may simply be a rib that needs to move the way it was designed.

Always in your corner,
