The Tiny Muscles...

You know that spot.
Right where your neck disappears into the base of your skull. The place you instinctively rub after staring at a computer too long, driving for hours, looking down at your phone, or finishing a particularly stressful day.
Hidden deep within that area is a small group of muscles called the suboccipitals, and despite their size, they have a surprisingly important job.
Small Muscles. Big Responsibility.
The suboccipitals are four small muscles located on each side at the very top of your neck. They help control the tiny, precise movements between your head and upper cervical spine.
But movement isn't their only job.
These muscles contain an abundance of sensory receptors that constantly provide your brain with information about where your head is positioned in space. Your eyes, inner ear, neck, and brain use this information together to help coordinate posture, balance, and movement.
In other words, these little muscles are working all day long just to help keep your head oriented.
And consider what we ask of them.
Hours looking at screens. Driving. Reading. Stress. Poor sleep positions. Looking down at phones. Even something as simple as repeatedly leaning your head forward toward a computer monitor can dramatically change the workload placed on themuscles at the top of your neck.
Eventually, they may start letting you know they've had enough.
When the Base of Your Skull Gets Angry
Suboccipital tension can feel like a deep ache or pressure where the skull meets theneck. For some people, that discomfort can travel upward toward the back or sides of the head.
You might notice stiffness when turning your head, tenderness when pressing beneath the skull, or that familiar urge to constantly stretch or rub the area.
And sometimes the problem isn't simply that these muscles are "tight."
Just like we've discussed with other areas of the body, a muscle working overtime may be compensating for something else.
Poor upper-back mobility, prolonged forward-head posture, altered neck movement, or repetitive positioning can all change the workload placed on this small group of muscles.
Give Them a Break
There are a few simple things you can do throughout the day to reduce the constant workload on this area.
Try the 20-20-20 reset. Every 20 minutes of screen time, look approximately 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Your eyes and neck often work together, so giving your visual system a break can also encourage you to change your head position.
Move your neck gently. Slowly look left and right several times, staying within a comfortable range. Your neck was designed to move, not remain frozen in one position for hours.
Bring the screen to you. Instead of repeatedly dropping your head toward your phone, tablet, or laptop, bring the device closer to eye level whenever possible.
Try a gentle chin nod. Without forcing your head backward, imagine making a very small "yes" motion while lengthening through the back of your neck. Hold briefly, relax, and repeat a few times. This should feel subtle, not like an aggressive stretch.
Get up and walk. Sometimes the best exercise for your neck isn't a neck exercise at all. Changing positions, moving your shoulders, walking, and getting away from thescreen gives the entire postural system a chance to reset.
Don't Forget What's Underneath
It's easy to focus exclusively on the spot that feels tight.
But your head doesn't sit on your neck in isolation. The neck sits on the upper back, the upper back interacts with the shoulders and rib cage, and all of it depends on healthy movement working together.
That's why repeatedly digging into a tight muscle isn't always the complete answer.
Sometimes we need to ask a better question:
"Why does this tiny muscle feel like it has to work so hard all day?"
